Recently, Zhejiang Perfect Technology Group has announced another significant achievement. The 1,500 Nm³/h methanol-to-hydrogen plant, built by the company to support a high-end electrical steel materials project for a well-known enterprise in Tianjin, has successfully passed acceptance testing and has been officially put into operation. The facility employs a “methanol reforming–hydrogen production plus pressure swing adsorption (PSA) purification” process, yielding hydrogen with a purity of 99.999%. It will directly serve the annealing stage of the customer’s 100,000‑ton‑per‑year high‑end grain-oriented silicon steel production line, providing a stable, high‑purity hydrogen supply.
Precise matching
The “high-purity” imperative for high-end electrical steel
This Tianjin-based company focuses on the high-end soft magnetic materials sector, specializing in high‑permeability grain‑oriented silicon steel, non‑oriented electrical steel, and ultra‑thin electrical steel strips (as thin as 0.03 mm). Its products are widely used in transformers, high‑end electric motors, and military‑grade electromagnetic materials, among other applications.
In the production process of silicon steel, core operations such as decarburization annealing and bell‑type annealing require large quantities of high‑purity hydrogen as a protective atmosphere. Hydrogen not only prevents oxidation of the steel but also plays a critical role in decarburization; its purity and impurity levels directly determine the magnetic properties and surface quality of the silicon steel. The methanol‑to‑hydrogen plant delivered by Perfect is specifically designed to meet these process requirements, providing customers’ annealing atmosphere systems with a stable, reliable, and cost‑effective hydrogen supply.
Process Analysis
Deep integration of methanol reforming and PSA purification

In the face of the stringent standards for high‑end electrical steel, this unit has been optimized in its process design with a particular focus on “low energy consumption” and “high yield”:
01 Ultimate Energy Efficiency: Reducing Overall Energy Consumption
Methanol steam reforming is a multi-component endothermic reaction. The unit employs a heat-transfer oil circulation system to provide stable thermal energy, ensuring efficient reaction operation. Moreover, the process design incorporates comprehensive heat recovery: the effluent gas first exchanges heat with the feed liquid to reduce its temperature, after which it undergoes scrubbing. The water and methanol separated by condensation during scrubbing are returned to the feed tank for recirculation, significantly reducing raw material consumption and achieving tangible cost reductions and efficiency gains.
02 Optimizing the Purification Process: Unveiling “7-1-4/V”
In the purification stage, to meet the customer’s requirement of minimizing methanol consumption, Pufei Ke implemented a tailored PSA process design:
▪ Efficient process design: The 7-1-4/V process—seven adsorption towers operating in alternating cycles, with one tower in adsorption and four pressure‑equalization steps—maximizes the recovery of hydrogen from dead space, thereby effectively improving hydrogen recovery rates.
▪ Vacuum Desorption (V): By applying a vacuum, the adsorbent is desorbed more thoroughly, ensuring hydrogen purity remains stable at 99.999% and meeting the stringent requirements of military‑grade applications and high‑end electromagnetic materials.
▪ Equipment Life Assurance: The four-stage pressure‑equalization design not only enhances yield but also slows the pressurization rate of the adsorption towers and reduces abrasive wear on the adsorbent, thereby ensuring long‑term, safe, and stable operation of the unit.

Three major advantages: safety, low consumption, and cost-effectiveness.
▪ Safe and reliable: Mature design and automated control ensure production safety and adapt to complex plant operating conditions.
▪ Low carbon and low energy consumption: An optimized heat exchange network and PSA process maximize energy recovery, reducing operational energy consumption.
▪ Cost-effective: Methanol-to-hydrogen technology offers excellent economic viability at small and medium scales, with convenient raw material transportation and storage.
The successful commissioning of this 1,500 Nm³/h methanol-to-hydrogen plant has provided a stable gas supply for Tianjin’s high-end electrical steel production line. Moving forward, Pufei Ke will continue to uphold the principles of “safety, low consumption, and high efficiency,” deepen its expertise in industrial hydrogen production and gas separation technologies, and deliver reliable hydrogen‑energy equipment and solutions to an expanding range of high‑end manufacturing sectors.
